Cecile Charles ventured into the world of art at a young age, selling her first work in Sacramento at 14. A large, realistic yet abstract lion, the work resides in a private collection in California. Immersed in the San Francisco street-art era of the 1970’s, Cecile would meet her clients by the wharf in the early morning. Presenting her with a fresh canvas, some as large as 10’x12’. In the midst of an unusual atmosphere artists were ‘finding themselves’ and Cecile along with many other artists at that time signed her name under a half dozen different pseudonyms. Even now the art of one of those pseudonyms is well collected. She would spend hours creating visions of unspoken volume, delivering a glowing abstract at the end of the day when the client returned to collect their purchase. Trained as an oil painter, she now explores all media available, stepping into unexplored territory when the muse arouses her creativity. In 1978, Cecile moved out of the spotlight to Spokane, Washington where she purposely retired from the public view for a chance to focus on her art and decide the next step, while continuing to sell her works out of state, including Florida, California, and Canada. Cecile is considered an eclectic artist, one who can express herself with equal skill no matter the subject. Traditional, conceptual, contemporary, abstract, warped graffiti, or political satire, her ability to change effortlessly from style to style allows her art to impact all lifestyles. She has produced several bodies of work 200 to 300 paintings in each style.
Her favorites are, mixed media, where she works with copper, copper leaf, liquid gold, liquid silver, tin, mixed papers, gouache, acrylics, watercolor and other earth elements.
Her work continues to be sent nationally for competition and sale. A well-collected artist in the mid-to-high range, Cecile’s works are insurable and well received in the art world. Only in the last 6 years has she kept track of where her artworks are collected but she produces three to four a week by consistently painting every day. Cecile imparts her love of art through teaching to young and old.
Cecile offers a wide variety of works that are the perfect gift for anyone, providing an excellent conversation piece and lifelong investment. Her works sell as Originals, Giclee prints, and Greeting Cards at The Heart of Spokane, and at various locations across the northwest.
